DALLAS — A couple hundred miles west of Dallas, on a busy interstate in a sprawling city that is about to see its largest corn harvest in more than 30 years, farmers are looking for a new way to market their crop.
On a weekday in late July, a group of people gathered at a farm gate near the intersection of I-40 and South Lamar Boulevard.
The crowd included a man and a woman who had been working with a local nonprofit, called Farmers Without Borders, to build a small warehouse for corn.
It’s the first step in the corn planting season, when many farmers are planting their first crop.
The group also included a handful of families that had already planted corn, but were looking for ways to get the crop into their hands faster.
“We’re just trying to make sure we’re doing it right,” said Marielo Rodriguez, a farmer who works with the group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is the largest in the state.
Rodriguez said that for the last year, her group had been trying to figure out how to get more corn into the hands of more people, and had started offering discounts to farmers who offered a free-of-charge delivery to people who wanted to make a purchase.
In Dallas, the number of households that own a home is projected to increase from 4.5 million people in 2020 to 6.4 million in 2040, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
As a result, some cities have launched initiatives to attract new housing supply, like those in New Orleans, where a $1,000 subsidy will help renters pay down their mortgage in a short period of time.
But there are other ways to increase the supply of homes in a city that has been struggling with housing demand.
In recent years, the Dallas market has been getting a lot of attention from local politicians and city officials.
The city council voted in July to expand its Corn Exchange, a network of five markets that will be able to distribute free-range corn to households with the cheapest price for the product.
In the next few months, the city will launch the first commercial corn seed distribution program in the Dallas metro area, and officials are working on ways to create a program for farmers that would give them a free supply of seeds to sell at farmers markets.
“I think we’ve got a long way to go,” said Jason Kornblau, the director of marketing for the Dallas Farmers Market.
He said that he hoped to have the program up and running by the end of the year.
A corn market isn’t the only way for Dallas to attract more housing to the city.
Another is the Dallas Food Network, which started in 2010 and offers a weekly, online marketplace for farmers to sell their products.
The program has seen significant growth in recent years.
In June, the network expanded to include a $100-a-day cash rebate to new farmers and small producers who want to sell products online, including seed, fertilizers and other services.
In 2018, the group received more than $4 million from the Texas government, the largest amount of funding for food marketing in the nation.
It is also a partner with the Texas Agriculture Commission, which will provide $500,000 for the next five years to support the Dallas food network.
For now, there are some hurdles.
The first crop is going to be planted next month in a small patch of land in North Lamar, near the airport, where the farmers will begin planting corn on Friday.
That patch of farmland is not large enough to accommodate the full corn crop that will likely be grown there, so the group is looking to have another crop ready by the middle of July.
The group will also be working on getting the first crop into the community and expanding that program in 2021.
But there are also challenges that the Dallas farmers market will face.
There is no way to know how many people will be in the area for the first year.
And the market is only in its first year, so some of the farmers are unsure of how much money they will make from selling their products and getting their seed.
There are also some logistical hurdles that will have to be overcome.
For one, the farmers won’t be able sell their corn online until 2021.
The first harvest will come in 2021, and then the market will have two years of sales before it becomes a commercial operation.
The market is also working on developing an online marketplace where farmers can sell their seeds and get discounts, like that offered by Farmers Without Borders.
But the organization is not yet ready to launch an online sales platform yet.
